Botox vs Fillers: Which is Right for You?
The appearance of wrinkles is an inevitable result of the aging process, but both Botox and dermal fillers can help reverse their effects without the need for surgery. With the intense popularity of both options, it can be difficult to identify which method is best. While the two techniques have a similar function, settling on either route depends on the type of wrinkles in question.
If a crease is only apparent when squinting or frowning, Botox should be all that is necessary. These types of dynamic wrinkles, caused by muscle movement, respond best with Botox treatment. It is often used on crow’s-feet, foreheads and frown lines by reducing the movement in areas of the face that are likely to wrinkle. This has the dual effect of minimizing wrinkles now, while also reducing the amount of future wrinkling caused by laughing or frowning. Botox is effective for about 3 to 4 months after each treatment.
On the other hand, static wrinkles, or creases visible on a relaxed face, are diminished with dermal fillers. Fillers are exactly what the word implies. As people age, the skin becomes thinner and the loss of elasticity and fullness is manifested into static wrinkles. Fillers can help eliminate these types of wrinkles by adding volume to the dermal layer. The duration of results vary with the type of filler used.
The easiest way to visualize the difference between each treatment is to think of a wrinkle as a valley between two mountains. Botox, a muscle relaxer, prevents the mountains from being pushed together, and fillers, like Collagen, fill in the valley.
Whether Botox or dermal fillers is the right choice will depend upon the positioning of facial muscles and the type of wrinkles present. As we get older, our creases age with us. If creases are only apparent when we squint, only Botox is necessary. If they become apparent while relaxed, then dermal fillers are the way to go. In some cases a combination of the two is needed to smooth away both static and dynamic wrinkles. With so many different factors to consider, it’s always important to discuss your treatment options with a qualified skincare consultant.
