Leg and Facial Veins
“Sclerotherapy has been around for over 300 years, but it is still the treatment of choice for spider veins. It is one of my favorite treatments to perform. I find it very gratifying to watch the vessels disappear as the sclerosant is injected.” – Dr. Noll

FAQs
What types of treatment do you offer?
Davis Dermatology offers sclerotherapy to treat leg veins and the Excel V laser to treat facial veins.
How does it work?
Sclerotherapy works by injecting a solution, called a sclerosant, into the vessel that causes the vessel to close.
The Excel V laser works by emitting light which is absorbed by the red blood cells in the vessel. The laser energy is then transferred as heat to the vessel, causing the vessel to close.
Am I a good candidate?
Sclerotherapy is best for the little spider veins (usually purple or red), and the medium ones that are called reticular veins (usually blue-green) on the legs. We do not treat very large rope-like veins.
Excel V laser is used to treat veins on the face, typically around the nose, on the cheeks, and chin.
How much does it cost?
Sclerotherapy $850+/ treatment
Excel V $325+/ treatment
Prices are subject to change without notice.
Does it hurt?
Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment. Numbing is not required as the treatment is well tolerated due to the use of a very small gauged needle and a non-stingy sclerosant. Patients are usually able to rest comfortably while treatment is performed.
What is the downtime?
There is no true downtime, however, patients are required to wear compression garments and are not permitted to do strenuous exercises for 2 weeks. Dr. Noll recommends doing this treatment during the cooler months to make stocking wearing more tolerable.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients will see a significant improvement after one treatment. It is common for patients to require multiple treatments depending on initial severity, treatment goals, and compliance with wearing stockings after treatment. Maintenance treatments may be needed in the future should vessels recur or new vessels develop.

A Closer Look at Leg Veins
A Closer Look at Leg Veins
Leg veins are a very common complaint. They typically become more visible in adulthood. While there is a genetic predisposition to getting leg veins, a history of standing for long periods and pregnancy are often reported by patients.
Unfortunately, at this moment there is no cure for leg veins. While vein stripping does remove the vein, new veins can always appear. Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment option that helps improve the appearance of the small and medium-sized vessels, called telangiectasias and reticular veins, respectively. Spider veins are usually purple or red while reticular veins are usually blue-green. The larger varicose veins, rope-like in appearance, require more invasive treatments, not currently offered in our office.
If you are not quite ready to treat your veins or if you spend a lot of time standing, Dr. Noll recommends wearing compression stockings, which are available at our office. If you tend to cross your legs while sitting Dr. Noll recommends crossing your legs at your ankles instead of at the knees. If you experience swelling or aches in your legs, elevating your feet whenever possible is also recommended. While these recommendations will not treat existing veins, they may help prevent new veins from forming and may prevent the worsening of existing vessels. In addition, using a self-tanner on the legs can help camouflage veins.
