Types of Scar Treatments
Types of Scar Treatments
Chemical Peels
When scars are primarily dark spots or hyperpigmentation, we recommend a series of chemical peels to be done in conjunction with lightening creams.
Steroid Injections
Steroid injections are used to help flatten raised scars also known as hypertrophic or keloid scars. These scars can result from surgeries, injuries, acne, and trauma to the skin. The injections help to soften and flatten the raised scars. Unfortunately, they do not typically change the color of the scar. Multiple treatments are required, performed at monthly intervals until the desired result is obtained. Patients tend to tolerate the treatment well.
Surgery
The nature of some scars requires surgical removal because they are unlikely to respond to other forms of treatment or the desired result requires complete removal. With surgical removal, the current scar will be replaced by a line scar. This treatment is done under local anesthesia.
Laser Treatment (LaserGenesis, Excel V, ResurFx, PicoGenesis FX, Halo)
Laser treatments can be used to treat some acne scars, surgical scars, red scars, stretch marks, and keloids. The lasers most commonly used in our office for scar treatments are LaserGenesis, Excel V, ResurFx, PicoGenesis FX, and Halo. These lasers improve the appearance of scars by removing the redness or stimulating collagen. LaserGenesis and Excel V treat redness. Resurfx and Picogenesis FX stimulate collagen. Halo is fractionated resurfacing. It removes pigment and stimulates collagen. Picogenesis FX is the preferred treatment in darker skin types that are at risk of hyperpigmentation after the treatment.
These laser treatments feel like a series of rubber band snaps on the skin. Multiple treatments are typically needed. Patients should avoid sun exposure two weeks before and after treatment.
Microneedling RF
Our microneedling RF treatment (Virtue RF) combines three collagen-stimulating treatments into one: microneedling, radiofrequency, and red light treatment. We treat acne scars, non-acne scars, and stretch marks. Treatment is performed after topical numbing at monthly intervals until desired results are obtained.

A Closer Look at Microneedling with Radiofrequency (Virtue RF)
A Closer Look at Microneedling with Radiofrequency (Virtue RF)
Combining Three Treatments in One
Virtue RF is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive treatment that stimulates the natural production of collagen. Virtue RF is designed to stimulate the natural production of collagen using three collagen-stimulating modalities: microneedling, radiofrequency, and red light therapy. It is shown to be effective in treating acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, mild skin laxity or loose skin. It is a great treatment to anti-age the face, neck, decolletage, hands, and body.
Collagen Induction Therapy
VirtueRF utilizes sterile gold-tipped microneedles that emit radiofrequency at the tips to create microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin. These micro-channels remain open for several hours, allowing the addition of growth factors like PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) to enhance collagen stimulation. This type of controlled injury to the skin stimulates the body to produce new collagen.
Wound Healing Mechanisms
Virtue RF microneedles are insulated except for the very tip, allowing for the release of radiofrequency energy deep to the surface of the skin while protecting the upper most part of the skin called the epidermis. This very precise radiofrequency energy stimulates the natural wound healing process of the skin causing remodeling of collagen, elastin, and wound contraction, which can improve skin laxity.
Blue and Red Light Therapy
Each pulse of the Virtue emits either blue or red light. Blue light is used if there is active acne. Red light is used to improve redness or for anti-aging. This low-level light therapy activates skin cells to increase collagen production, moisture levels in the skin, and improve skin tone and texture.
