What is Skin Resurfacing?
Resurfacing brings vibrancy back to the skin. By removing the weathered and dull top layer of skin, we can uncover the fresh new skin underneath. Resurfacing improves tone and texture, softens scars, and improves fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots. After treatment, patients enjoy more youthful-looking skin.
Non-Laser Skin Resurfacing (SaltFacial MD)
SaltFacial MD is a three-step dermabrasion-like treatment that renews, replenishes, and rejuvenates the skin. It is a hidden gem in the realm of anti-aging and acne treatments.
Step 1: Renew
Using a proprietary system, salt, a natural exfoliant, is used to remove dead skin cells. Salt contains minerals that nourish the skin and it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Step 2: Replenish
Replenishing products are applied to the skin with the assistance of ultrasound. With ultrasound assistance products can reach twice as deep.
Step 3: Rejuvenate
The final step is a medical-grade red light treatment for collagen stimulation or a blue light treatment for acne.
Please note that SaltFacial is not a relaxing facial, but a medical-grade anti-aging/anti-acne facial. It is a gem and the best bang for your buck as far as anti-aging treatments. It will leave your skin feeling renewed and refreshed. It may require topical numbing cream and may have mild downtime.
Laser Skin Resurfacing (Halo, CoolPeel, Erbium)
We offer two types of laser resurfacing treatments: fractionated and fully ablative.
Fractionated laser resurfacing (HALO, COOLPEEL) treats a portion of the skin while leaving some surrounding areas intact for faster healing. Fractionated laser treatments are great for mild to moderate fine lines, texture irregularities, and sun damage. The depth of tissue removal is shallower compared to fully ablative lasers allowing for a faster recovery, usually 1 week or less.
Fully ablative laser resurfacing is the most aggressive laser treatment performed in our office. We utilize an erbium laser to remove the entire outer layer (epidermis) and part of the underlying layer (dermis). This is a very effective treatment for deep wrinkles and pigment. The results are dramatic. Nerve blocks are utilized and recovery is 2 weeks.
Patients typically choose the treatment based on the amount of downtime their schedule can accommodate. CoolPeel usually has 2-3 days of social downtime. Halo has 7 days of downtime, and full face resurfacing with an Erbium laser is 2 solid weeks of intense recovery.

What to Expect During Treatment
-
Before the procedures, our team will help make you feel comfortable and if necessary, will apply numbing cream to the treatment areas. Sun exposure should be avoided 2 weeks before the treatment.
-
Treatments will typically last 30 minutes to an hour. The laser treatment feels like a series of rubbing bands snapping on the skin. During the first of three steps of the SaltFacial, salt will be used to exfoliate the skin. This feels like salt hitting your legs at the beach on a windy day. Steps 2 and 3 have no associated discomfort.
-
After completion of the treatment, our team will provide you with detailed post-care instructions. Sun exposure should be avoided for 2 weeks.

A Closer Look at the Downtime of Skin Resurfacing
A Closer Look at the Downtime of Skin Resurfacing
Downtime can be divided into three types based on severity: mild, moderate, and severe.
Mild downtime means the skin is pink, maybe a few small scabs, slightly sensitive, but the patient feels fine. We call this “social downtime.” The skin usually recovers in 2-4 days. Treatments that may fall into this category include mild-setting CoolPeel, PicoGenesisFx, SaltFacial, and IPL treatments.
Moderate downtime means the skin may be pink, swollen, and with several tiny scabs, but the patient feels fine and healthy. Other people may notice that the skin looks irritated. The skin usually recovers in 5-7 days. This too is called social downtime. Treatments that typically fall into this category include moderate-setting CoolPeel, PicoGenesisFX, IPL, and Halo.
Severe downtime means the skin is raw, oozing, and possibly bleeding. Patients may feel some discomfort as the skin recovers. This is true medical downtime as the patient must remain indoors for 2 weeks as the skin heals. The treatment that falls into this category in our office is full laser ablation with the TRL Erbium laser.
When deciding which treatment to choose. It is important to take into consideration the amount of downtime your schedule can accommodate. It is also important to realize that the more gentle the downtime, the more treatments will be needed to achieve results. The more severe the downtime the more dramatic the results will be after each treatment.
