Sclerotherapy works by injecting a solution, called a sclerosant, into the vessel that causes the vessel to close. The Excel V laser works by emitting light which is absorbed by the red blood cells in the vessel. The laser energy is then transferred as heat to the vessel, causing the vessel to close.
Sclerotherapy is best for the little spider veins (usually purple or red) and the medium ones that are called reticular veins (usually blue-green) on the legs. We do not treat very large rope-like veins.<br>The Excel V laser is used to treat veins on the face, typically around the nose, on the cheeks, and chin.

Things to avoid one week before treatment: Vitamin E, fish oil, aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Ginkgo biloba, garlic, and St. John’s wort. The sclerotherapy treatment consists of a series of injections with a very tiny needle. After the treatment, the area will be wrapped with compression bandages. During Excel V laser treatments, patients feel a cold sensation and then a rubber band-like snap on the skin. Depending on the area treated, patients may also notice flashes of light, rest assured the eyes are protected.
Following sclerotherapy treatment, patients are required to wear compression stockings and refrain from strenuous exercise for two weeks. After Excel V laser therapy, patients must avoid sun exposure for two weeks.

Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment. Numbing is not required as the treatment is well tolerated due to using a very small-gauge needle and a non-stinging sclerosant. Patients are usually able to rest comfortably while treatment is performed.
There is no true downtime; however, patients are required to wear compression garments and are not permitted to do strenuous exercises for two weeks. Dr. Noll recommends this treatment during the cooler months to make stocking wearing more tolerable.
Most patients will see a significant improvement after one treatment. It is common for patients to require multiple treatments depending on initial severity, treatment goals, and compliance with wearing stockings after treatment. Maintenance treatments may be needed in the future should vessels recur or new vessels develop.
