Chemical Peels
“Sclerotherapy has been around for over 300 years, but it is still the treatment of choice for spider veins. It is one of my favorite treatments to perform. I find it very gratifying to watch the vessels disappear as the sclerosant is injected.” – Dr. Noll

FAQs
How does it work?
A solution, also called a sclerosant, is injected into the vessel that causes the vessel to close.
Am I a good candidate?
Sclerotherapy is best for the little spider veins (usually purple), and the medium ones that are called reticular veins (usually blue-green). Very large rope-like veins called varicose veins, are usually treated with more invasive treatments.
How much does it cost?
$675-$1250 per treatment (Cost varies. Prices are subject to change without notice.)
Does it hurt?
Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment. However, the treatment is well tolerated due to the availability of a more comfortable sclerosant and due to the very small need used.
What is the downtime?
There is no true downtime, however, patients are required to wear compression garments and not permitted to do strenuous exercises for 2 weeks. Dr. Noll recommends doing this treatment during the cooler months to make stocking wearing more tolerable.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients will see a significant improvement after one treatment. It is common for patients to require multiple treatments depending on initial severity, treatment goals, and compliance with wearing stockings after treatment.
What to Expect
-
Things to avoid one week prior to treatment: Vitamin E, fish oil, aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Ginkgo biloba, garlic, and St. John’s wort. Alcohol and Caffeine should be avoided for 12 hours prior to treatment. (click here for complete list) These medications increase the risk of bruising. Prescription medications should be taken as directed by the physician.
-
The treatment consists of a series of injections with a very tiny needle. After the treatment the legs will be wrapped with bandages and the patient instructed to walk around beautiful downtown Davis for ten minutes before leaving.
-
Following the treatment patients are required to wear compression stockings and abstain from strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.

A Closer Look at Leg Veins
A Closer Look Leg Veins

Varicose Veins
Leg veins are a very common complaint. They typically become more visible in adulthood. While there is a genetic predisposition to getting leg veins, a history of standing for long periods and pregnancy are often reported by patients. Patients often tell me they just want to be able to wear shorts, dresses, or skirts again.
Unfortunately, at the moment there is no cure for leg veins. While vein stripping does remove the vein, new veins can always appear. Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment option that helps improve the appearance of the small and medium sized vessel, called telangiectasias and reticular veins, respectively. Spider veins are usually purple or red in color while reticular veins are usually blue-green in color. The larger varicose veins, usually rope-like in appearance, require more invasive treatments, not currently offered in our office, like Venaseal, EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), and vein stripping.
If you are not quite ready to treat your veins, Dr. Noll recommends wearing compression stockings if you will be standing for long periods of time and if you are pregnant, crossing you legs at your ankles instead of at the knees, and elevating your feet whenever you have the opportunity. While these tactics will not treat existing veins, they may help prevent new veins and may prevent worsening of existing vessels. In addition, one trick patients do is to us self-tanner on the legs to help camouflage veins.
